September 17, 2023 – Michael Burkham has announced his candidacy for Macon County Coroner.  Burkham is hoping to replace Michael Day, who announced that he will not seek re-election. Day has been Macon County Coroner since 1994.

Burkham, who is a lifelong resident of Macon County, earned his bachelor’s degree from Millikin University. Burkham worked as a paramedic for four decades and served as the Director of Decatur Ambulance Service. Burkham has also volunteered with the Mount Zion Fire Department for two decades.

Burkhram has also served as the Vice President of the Tyler Yount Foundation since 2013.  Alongside his wife Kathy, they established the Tyler Yount Foundation in early 2013, after Kathy’s son Tyler, lost his battle with addiction. In 2015, the foundation received certification for overdose awareness and started the Emergency Overdose Responder Program. Since then, more than 500 individuals, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, probation officers, and those affected by addiction and their families, have been trained to administer naloxone during overdose emergencies.

Current coroner Mike Day’s term expires on Nov. 30, 2024.
