September 26, 2023- There will be a Labor Fair on Saturday, September 30th from 1-4 pm at Richland Community College’s Shilling Center. The event is meant to connect job seekers with labor unions, and is open to any individual looking for a job.
The Labor Fair is sponsored by IBEW Local 146, Teamsters Local 916, Iron Workers Local 46, Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 137, Laborers Local 159, Decatur Federation of Teaching Assistants, the Decatur Building & Construction Trades Council, and is hosted by the Democratic Women of Macon County (DWMC).
“We are an organization that promotes empowerment of women and what better way to support them than to connect them with jobs and opportunities that promote job security and stability for their families,” Jennifer Ellis, DWMC Co-Chair, said.
The sponsoring building trade unions will provide opportunities available through their apprenticeship programs. This will include detailed information about when application are accepted and what qualifications are needed for each trade.
In addition, Decatur Federation of Teaching Assistants are recruiting volunteers and workers to apply for positions.
The EnRich program at Richland will also be available to share training opportunities to help students receive Technical Skills and Essential Skills Training – satisfying the need to build a skilled workforce in the manufacturing and healthcare industries.
“Macon County is very fortunate right now because there are so many good union positions available. The building trades are needing apprentices and several factories are hiring as well,” Amy Rueff, union activist and Co-Chair of the DWMC said. “It is our hope that we can connect those seeking jobs with a life-changing career in a union earning better pay and benefits while having a voice on the job.”
