City and County clarify dead animal disposal procedures

As of October 1st, Macon CountyAnimal Control will no longer remove dead wildlife within the City of Decatur.

The City says it will pick up dead wild animals in the City’s street right of way. Where possible, City crews can also pickup large wild animal carcasses on private properties inside the City of Decatur such as deer and coyotes.The city says smaller dead animals on private property (such as squirrels, birds, raccoons, ground hogs and opossums) should be carefully bagged and disposed in the trash by private property owners and residents.

Macon County Animal Control will continue providing pick up deceased domestic animals found within the City of Decatur. For pick up, you can call Animal Control at (217) 425-4508.

For pick up/disposal of dead wild animals in the City of Decatur call Public Works at (217) 542-3589. If it is afterhours and the wildlife is a roadway hazard, report it to CIRDC at (217) 424-1311.
