September 26, 2023- Comedian, actress, and television writer Janelle James will be performing at Millikin University’s Kirkland Fine Arts Center on Saturday, October 14th, at 7:30 pm.
James stars in the scene-stealing role of ‘Principal Ava’ in the hit ABC series, “Abbott Elementary.” The show has garnered wins for Best Supporting Actress, Comedy from the Hollywood Critics Association and Black Reel Awards, as well as nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award, Golden Globe Award, Critics’ Choice Award, Screen Actors Guild Award and Independent Spirit Award.
James’ latest half-hour stand-up special is featured on Netflix’s “The Stand Ups. Previously, James served as both a writer and actor for Showtime’s “Black Monday” and Apple’s animated series, “Central Park.” She has toured with Chris Rock, Amy Schumer and David Cross. She took over the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival (now The Janelle James Comedy Festival) in Brooklyn, New York. She was a “New Face” at the Just For Laughs Festival Montreal, was named one of The 50 Most Funny People in Brooklyn, and recently featured as one of Variety’s Top Ten Comedians to Watch.
James’ debut comedy album, Black and Mild, was released on all major streaming networks in 2017 to rave reviews. Her podcast, “You In Danger Gurl,” was listed as one of Spotify’s top comedy podcasts for 2020.
James is just the latest in a long line of comedic talent to grace the Kirkland stage. Past visiting comedians include Lily Tomlin, David Letterman, The Second City, Billy Crystal, Phyllis Diller, Wayne Brady and Jay Leno.
“We’re excited to host such an accomplished and hilarious comedian here in Decatur, and we can’t wait to give our community a night of laughter and good times that they won’t soon forget,” Bryan Diver, Director of Kirkland Fine Arts Center said. “James’ standup is bone-rattling good and just the ticket for 2023.”
The show is recommended for audiences 18 years and older.
Tickets are between $40 and $100 and are on sale now at kirklandfinearts.com.
Tickets can be purchased online, over the phone or in person at the ticket office between 12 pm and 4:30 pm until Friday.
