Though it didn't chart as a single in the U.S., “Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)” became one of David Bowie's more popular tracks and helped to usher in the '80s with a more accessible, pop-oriented sound than he'd explored on his previous few albums.

However, the song was a top 20 hit in the U.K. in 1981.

The Scary Monsters album reached Number 12 on the Billboard 200 and Number One in the U.K.

Like many of the tracks on the album titled after it, “Scary Monsters” benefits from the guitar contributions of King Crimson founder Robert Fripp.

Scary Monsters found Bowie in a prolific period. Besides recording, he also acted in the theatrical production of The Elephant Man.
