October 25, 2023 – The Decatur Parks Foundation has announced a new campaign to raise funds for a new, expanded alligator exhibit at Scovill Zoo. To kick off the campaign, The Andreas Family Foundation has committed $250,000 in a matching donation for every dollar raised.
“Many of our wonderful amenities at Scovill Zoo are because of generous donors and supporters of Scovill Zoo. Today we are announcing another generous supportive family that saw then need for a renovated exhibit and is stepping up to help,” said Aly Delatte, Director of the Decatur Parks Foundation.
To support the expansion and improvement of the Alligator Exhibit, people can donate on-line, donate at Boo at the Zoo, purchase t-shirts, GATOR-AID, or have a donation bottle at their business to send in support to the Parks office.
Gator-Aid is an initiative within the schools of throughout Macon County. Students can begin collecting their spare change. Change will be brought into classes where teachers can collect and deposit the change to the provided Gator-Aid bottles. The Decatur Parks Foundation will collect the change from schools and classrooms. Once all the funds are collected, the Parks Foundation will tally the funds donated and determine which classroom was able to donate the most change.
The new facilities will house “G,” the eleven-foot, 300 pound, 39-year-old male alligator and “L,” the six-foot, 200 pound, 27-year-old alligator.
