December 13, 2023 – For the past six months, Millikin MBA students have collaborated on a donor-funded domestic violence prevention project to create a metrics system that tracks domestic violence statistics in Macon County for 2023.
Millikin University MBA students presented their findings on the project Tuesday, providing the most complete picture of domestic violence information and statistics for Macon County that has ever been researched.
Millikin noted that domestic violence statistics are hard to track from agency to agency. Researchers say the project has worked to connect information points from the different stakeholders in domestic violence reporting across Macon County. Retired Decatur Police Department Lieutenant Shannon Gutierrez Seal served as the project liaison with Millikin and Dove, Inc.
Nine Millikin Data Analytics MBA track students and three faculty members worked on the project over four courses since June 2023. The project was funded through a donation by Decatur resident Ed Bachrach.
According to the study, there were 2,646 domestic violence calls between January 1st and November 3oth of 2023. The average calls made in a day were 8.37 and most of those calls occurred on a Sunday (416).
Researchers also found that the least amount of domestic violence calls were made on a Thursday (347).
The study found that males committed 91.5% of domestic offenses, while women committed 8.5% of offenses. The average amount of cases with prior domestic violence cases were 3, while the average amount of prior general offenses was 18.
Shannon Guiterrez Seal, Project Liason with Dove, Inc./Retired Lieutenant Decatur Police Department, and Adriyanna Patterson, Millikin Data Analytics MBA Student joined Byers & Co Wed morning to discuss the study. Listen to the podcast now!
