January 25, 2024 – The Macon County Fair board has announced some improvements and additions to this year’s fair in June.
Evan Hall, President of the Macon County Fair Board, said that the board has been working to highlight the fair’s origins. “The Board has been very good about investing money back into the roots of the County Fair: the livestock shows, the agriculture, those types of things is where we are spending a lot of our focus.”
Hall highlighted some of the grounds improvements, including knocking down decrepit barns, replacing 70% of the water lines on the grounds, remodeling facilities, and a massive tree project to clean out brush around the perimeter. The fair has also invested in expanding its cow wash and purchasing new livestock scales.
As a part of getting back to its agricultural roots, the fair will also be hosting two new livestock shows; a poultry open and junior show as well as a rabbit open and junior show. The Macon County fair is already the home of one of the largest two-day hog shows in the state. The Macon County Fair also announced that they are bringing back the junior steer sale of champions after a 20-year hiatus.
The Downstate Classic harness racing, tractor pull, and rodeo will return this year as well as expanded food and craft vendors.
For music, the Marshall Tucker Band will play the grandstand on Thursday, June 6th. Tickets will go on sale on Monday at the Macon County Fair website. In addition, the Pizazz band as well as country artist Jake Gill will play the Dunn Company Barn with free admission.
To better accommodate parking, the Fair also announced a new partnership with St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the City of Decatur. Fairgoers will be able to park at the church and take a free trolly shuttle to the fairgrounds.
