February 21,2024 – History of the Heartland will host “Living Legends of the Big Reds Machine” celebrating the Stephen Decatur High School basketball teams of the 1960s.

The event will be held Saturday, May 18, at Doherty’s backroom. Members of the 1960s era SDHS basketball teams are invited to participate in a moderated panel discussion to share memories. Doors will open at 4PM, and the program begins at 5PM.

“We are pleased to be able to host these hometown heroes and provide an event for the trophies to be showcased. The Coach Kintner era of basketball teams really put Decatur Illinois on the map,” said Bret Robertson, chairman of History of the Heartland.

The Decatur Public Schools have generously agreed to allow the display of numerous trophies from the era, including the 1962 State Championship trophy. There will be photo opportunities available of the trophies as they are on display during the event. Admission will be free of charge and the public is encouraged to attend.
