March 3, 2024 – In celebration of Read Across America Day, ADM Decatur team members volunteered to read pre-selected stories to elementary classes at American Dreamer STEM Academy Friday.

ADM Cares has a long history of supporting Decatur Public Schools by enhancing agriculture and STEM learning opportunities. ADM says its furthering its partnership with the school district through volunteer efforts for Read Across America Day.

Heidi Oswald, ADM’s Glycol Facility plant manager, read  “The Koala Who Could” by Rachel Bright, to 3rd grade students. Thestory that explores the themes of developing the confidence to try new things.

“Any interaction children have with books and people from their own community is a benefit for them,” Oswald said. “To be able to read a story and talk about it afterwards is very important because it stresses comprehension – it’s important to be able to know how to read and understand what we’re reading. It’s also great to be involved in this type of community outreach because the students can ask us questions about what we do and how we impact the community at large.”

Read Across America Day is recognized nationally on March 2 in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. It is the largest national celebration of reading and is implemented to motivate individuals to build knowledge through reading.
