Mt. Zion Varsity Boys Basketball Team headed to State this weekend

March 6, 2024 -Head Coach Dale Schuring and his 35-1 Mt.Zion Varsity Boys Basketball team are headed to the state tournament, held from March 7th – March 9th. They are set to play Chicago Mt. Carmel, Friday morning March 8th at 9:30 am at The State Farm Center. 

The Mt.Zion team holds a record of 35-1 record, which is a school record for wins, their lone loss was to 2023 3A State Champion Metamora, 72-69 on 1/19. Not only are they the first Mt.Zion team to make it to the state tournament, but they are also the last big school county team to make state tournament since 1976 Eisenhower, and the last County team to make state tournament since 2015 St. Teresa, who won 2nd Place.

  •  Danville, 70-50 on 2/21 
  • Champaign Central, 72-39 on 2/23 
  •  Rochester, 58-51 on 2/28 
  •  MacArthur, 61-48 on 3/1 
  •  Centralia, 47-46 Monday night 

Teams competing include in the state final include: 

Class 1A: Meridian High School, Chicago Hope Academy, Aurora Christian School, Winchester High School 

Class 2A: Phillips Academy High School, Williamsville High School, Benton High School, Byron High School 

Class 3A: Mt. Carmel High School, Mt. Zion High School, DePaul College Prep, Richwoods High School 

Class 4A: Normal Community High School, Palatine High School, New Trier High School, Homewood-Flossmoor High School
