IDPH encourages screenings during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Mar 25, 2024 | 12:13 PM

March 25, 2024 – March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) emphasizes the importance of regular screenings in combatting this preventable illness. With colorectal cancer being the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra stresses the significance of early detection. Despite potential apprehensions, screenings offer a crucial opportunity for prevention or early treatment, significantly improving survival rates.

“Colorectal cancer screening saves lives. We know, for many, that it can be scary or inconvenient to get screened, but most types of colorectal cancers are preventable or treatable when detected early. If you are 45 and over, please talk to your healthcare provider on the right test for you. Let’s come together this Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness, share stories, and save lives.” says Dr. Sameer Vohra, IDPH Director.

As highlighted by Governor JB Pritzker’s proclamation declaring March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in Illinois, the campaign aims to educate and encourage individuals to undergo screenings, ultimately reducing this disease in the state.
