May 7, 2024 -History of the Heartland has commissioned a limited-edition elongated coin commemorating Fans Field Stadium in Decatur. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the last season played at Fans Field in 1974.
The stadium hosted many future major leaguers as they worked their way through the minor leagues. Players such as Gary Mathews, John D’Acquisto, Johnnie LeMaster, and hometown heroes Roe Skidmore and manager Al Unser. August 19, 1974, was the final game played at the stadium. The Fans Field Stadium was demolished in 1975.
Coins will be given away to the first 20 attendees at various Historic Preservation Week events. The coins are FREE courtesy of the History of the Heartland organization. Historic Preservation Week is May 13-May 19. Locations will be announced on the History of the Heartland Facebook page.
The coin features an image of the iconic Fans Field Minor League baseball stadium. This is the third of an annual series of limited-edition commemorative coins to be pressed for Historic Preservation Week. The first coin featured the Walrus Manufacturing building and the second was an image of the Staley Pump House.
