May 13, 2024 – The Illinois Department of Public Health is initiating National Lyme Disease Awareness Month, urging residents to guard against tick-borne illnesses, including Lyme disease, which affects over 500,000 Americans annually.

Dr. Sameer Vohra, IDPH Director, stresses the importance of education and precautionary measures to combat tick-related health risks, β€œit is the most common vector-borne illness in the United States with more than 500,000 people diagnosed and treated each year,”. The IDPH offers educational resources, including fact sheets and interactive tools like the Tick Defense Knowledge Check crossword puzzle.

Preventive actions include thorough tick checks after outdoor activities, prompt removal of ticks, and awareness of symptoms associated with tickborne diseases. The IDPH has collaborated with the Illinois Natural History Survey to create an interactive Tick Surveillance Map, aiding in regional risk assessment. Travelers are cautioned about the heightened prevalence of Lyme disease in specific geographic regions.

Practical tips for minimizing exposure to ticks include wearing light-colored clothing, using EPA-registered insect repellents, and conducting thorough tick checks.

As Illinoisans venture outdoors, awareness and adherence to preventive measures are crucial in mitigating the risk of tick-borne illnesses.
