Decatur Area Arts Council Hosts Local Locomotives Exhibit This Summer

May 21st, 2024 –  The event will run from June 7th to July 23rd. This summer’s exhibit features a variety of historical artifacts and artworks.
The exhibit includes items from private collections and places like the Staley Museum, Macon County History Museum, Wabash Frisco & Pacific Association, and the National Railroad Hall of Fame. The event is free and open to the public.
“We’re thrilled to offer this exhibit as a way to connect our community with its rich railroad heritage. It’s an educational experience that resonates with many local families who have personal and professional ties to the railroads.” said DAAC Executive Director Jerry Johnson.
The month of activities will include:
  • Opening First Friday Event (Friday, June 7th from 5-7:30 pm) featuring the Local Locomotivesexhibit in the 1st floor Anne Lloyd Gallery and hands-on artmaking in the 2nd floor Barnett Art Studio. Music by Kristen Stoddard will be on the 3rd floor Loft, 5:30-7 pm. We will also have refreshments catered by Coney McKane’s on the 3rd floor Loft. Lastly, Water Street will be closed to allow complimentary kids ride on a train powered by a conductor.
  • Group Field Trips (June/July) are available to schedule throughout the summer. A field trip features a guided tour of the exhibit, followed by a hands-on art project based on the history of our local railway system. Please call 217-423-3189 for more information.
  • July First Friday Gallery Walk (Friday, July 12th from 5-7 pm) explore the gallery in the community-friendly open house, featuring the music from local musician Dee Robinson. Light refreshments provided.
