May 28, 2024 – Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois, Decatur Memorial Hospital, and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital will host a National Cancer Survivors Day event to honor local cancer survivors, whether recently diagnosed or in remission for years.

Cancer survivors are invited to Fairview Park on Saturday, June 1st, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will feature a meal provided by Notorious P.I.G. and music from Pizzazz. Attendance is free and no registration is required. Survivors may bring one guest each.

“It’s inspiring to see how this event has become an annual tradition for many cancer survivors. It’s an opportunity to reflect and celebrate together.” said Jill Andrews, Administrative Director of Radiation Oncology, Memorial Cancer Care in Decatur.

“Newly diagnosed cancer patients often don’t know what to expect in the future. National Cancer Survivors Day helps show that there is life beyond the diagnosis and treatment.” said Valerie Jordan, Director of Oncology Services at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital.

Physicians, healthcare workers, and volunteers will be available throughout the event to assist survivors and their caregivers. The hosting organizations will also provide information on volunteer opportunities and ways attendees can give back.

“It’s rewarding for us, as caregivers, to see our patients thriving,” said Christel Wheeler, a Nurse Practitioner with Cancer Care Specialists of Illinois. “This is an event we look forward to all year long.”
