June 2, 2024 –HSHS St.Mary’s Hospital, Decatur Memorial Hospital, and Cancer Care Specialist of Illinois celebrated National Cancer Survivors Day with a Cancer Survivor Picnic at Fairview Park on Saturday.
This event featured meals provided by Notorious P.I.G. and music from Pizzazz. Healthcare workers and volunteers were available throughout the event to assist survivors and their caregivers.
Trisha Henning with Cancer Care Specialist states, “It’s just all about survivorship, it’s about our healthcare workers coming together….it means the world, the support from all of the doctors, nurses, and radiation therapists”.
“It means, every year that get to see a survivor is another year that their living…I’m a radiation therapist by background so I get to treat the patients and walk the journey with them” said Director of Oncology from HSHS St.Mary’s hospital Val Jordan.
Decatur Memorial Hospital Cancer Care’s Outreach Coordinator Rachal Ward also states, “There’s so many people coming together and saying, “we are here, we support you”, it’s one of the best parts of my job to see how many members of the community come together over something that shatters so many people’s lives”.
