Various celebrations to be held this weekend for Juneteenth

June 10, 2024 -The African-American Cultural and Genealogical Society (AACGS) and The Devon Lakeshore Amphitheater will each be hosting celebrations this weekend in honor of Juneteenth. 

First, the AACGS will host a banquet at the Decatur Club on June 14th  from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, featuring guest speaker Dr. Dorthy Granberry. On June 15th, AACGS will hold the Juneteenth Celebration in Central Park from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.

The celebration in Central Park will include a parade from noon to 1:00 pm with Grand Marshal Commander Charles Loury and Co-Grand Marshal and Lincoln Impersonator Kevin Wood, a praise team, a performance by the Explosive Gems Majorettes, the Black Cowboys, a kid’s corner, a chess tournament and more. There will also be vendors, food trucks, and the first 100 people will a receive free ice cream.

Sunday, June 16th, The Devon Lakeshore Amphitheater will host its “Juneteenth Freedom Day” from 2:00 pm-6:00 pm. This event is also for all ages. 

The event will include Prince Night, The Ultimate Prince Tribute featuring Mico Wave, beginning at 4:45 p.m. until 6pm. 

African Cultural Entertainment out of Chicago will feature drummers and dancers showcasing the art of African Dance. There will also be music bingo, 50/50 raffles, door prizes, and more! 

There will also be a full lineup of events throughout the day, including 23 vendors promoting various goods and services, a kids’ play area with face painting, rock decorating, and games, live art created by artist Antonio Burton through his Picasso Experience, a gallery of local artists, and food trucks. Early arrivals will also receive a $5 food voucher. 

In addition, CASA will be announcing the winner of their playhouse raffle at 4:30 p.m., with raffle tickets available for purchase at the event. The celebration also includes a Battle of the DJ’s, featuring an Old School vs. New School battle between DJ FRESH and NowDecagtur intern DJ DREE .
