USDA taking applications for Rural Housing Repair Grants in Illinois

 June 24, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development is accepting applications for grants aimed at repairing or rehabilitating affordable housing in rural Illinois. These grants target homes, rental properties, or cooperatives for low or very low-income residents. 

The announcement, made by USDA Rural Development Acting State Director Molly Hammond, coincides with USDA’s Homeownership Month, emphasizing the importance of safe and affordable housing in rural and Tribal areas. The funding is available through the Housing Preservation Grant program. 

Eligible applicants include state or local government entities, federally recognized Indian Tribes, nonprofits, and faith-based organizations. The USDA is making approximately $12.2 million available, with $2.2 million set aside for disaster assistance, offering a maximum award of $50,000. 

Funds may be used to repair or replace electrical wiring, foundations, roofs, insulation, heating systems, and water/waste disposal systems. They can also support accessibility features, purchase construction materials, and cover administrative expenses up to 20%.
