Year over year unemployment rate in Decatur unchanged

June 30, 2024 – Over-the-year, total nonfarm jobs increased in ten metropolitan areas and decreased in four for the year ending May 2024, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (DES). Over-the-year, the unemployment rate increased in twelve metropolitan areas, decreased in one and was unchanged in one.

In Decatur, the not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 5.8 percent in May 2024 was unchanged from May 2023. There were an estimated 2,615 unemployed people in the labor force in May 2024.

The number of total nonfarm jobs in the Decatur metro area decreased by -500 compared to last May.

Employment increased in the Manufacturing (+200) and Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities (+100) sectors. Payrolls were unchanged in Retail Trade, Wholesale Trade, Information, Other Services, Financial Activities, Government and Professional-Business Services.

Payroll employment decreased in Private Education-Health Services (-300), Mining-Construction (-300) and Leisure-Hospitality (-200) between May 2023 and May 2024.
