Decatur Police Department Launches Speeding Enforcement Campaign

July 9, 2024 –  The Decatur Police Department, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois State Police, and over 200 local law enforcement agencies, has announced an intensified enforcement effort to reduce speeding throughout the state. During July, motorists can expect increased patrols targeting speeding and other traffic violations.

“Speeding causes unnecessary danger on our roads. Speed greatly reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around another vehicle, a hazardous object, or an unexpected curve. Speeding drivers put themselves, their passengers, and other motorists at tremendous risk.” said Sgt. Steve Hagemeyer.

Throughout the enforcement blitz, officers will focus on enforcing posted speed limits, particularly on North Water St, North Main St., North Oakland Ave, and North 22nd St., where most speed-related crashes occur. “Offenders will be stopped and ticketed. Our goal is to save lives.” said Sgt. Hagemeyer.

The speed enforcement effort is funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
