July 24, 2024 – Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has proclaimed Richard James Oglesby Day is July 25, 2024, in the State of Illinois. This proclamation is to recognize Governor Oglesby’s contribution to the state and to the country on the 200th anniversary of his birth. The proclamation was requested by the Gov. Oglesby Mansion Board of Directors.

Historically, Richard J. Oglesby is recognized as Decatur’s most distinguished citizen. He served his country as a U.S. Senator, a Civil War Union General, and a three-time Governor of Illinois. The Governor was born July 25, 1824. Oglesby was a close friend and confidant of Abraham Lincoln. He nominated Lincoln for the presidency in Decatur and ultimately accompanied his body back to Illinois after the assassination.

The mansion will be hosting a 200th Birthday Celebration in honor of the Governor. The event will be tomorrow from 6pm-9 pm, tickets are $25 and are still available at the door.

Oglesby Mansion Board President, Carol Pelz says, “All proceeds from this event will go to maintain the mansion. Our board is grateful for this recognition. This honor assists us in our mission to continue to educate all generations about the significant contributions Governor Oglesby made.”
