Decatur sees unemployment increase over July 2023

August 22, 2024 – According to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (DES). Over-the-year, the unemployment rate increased in all fourteen metropolitan areas for the year ending July 2024, including in Decatur.

The not-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 7.4 percent in July 2024 in Decatur increased from 6.5 percent in July 2023.

The number of total nonfarm jobs in the Decatur metro area of 47,500 in July 2024 was unchanged from July 2023.

Employment increased in the Mining-Construction (+300), Retail Trade (+100) and Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities (+100) sectors.

Payrolls were unchanged in Information, Manufacturing, Other Services, Wholesale Trade and Financial Activities.

Payroll employment decreased in Private Education-Health Services (-200), Government (-100), Leisure-Hospitality (-100) and Professional-Business Services (-100) between July 2024 and July 2023.
