Stair Climb and Honor Rides planned Wednesday to remember 9/11

September 10, 2024 – A number of events are being held Wednesday to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11.

The Hampton Inn in Mt. Zion will host its annual Memorial Stair Climb on Wednesday beginning at 8:00 a.m. at the Hampton Inn at 4855 E. Evergreen Court.

The Stair Climb serves as a reminder of the stairs that firefighters had to climb on that terrible day in an attempt to save lives. The event was started in 2020. Participants will make their way up to the fourth floor of the building a total of 28 times to represent the 110 stories, 2071 steps of the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers.

Coziahr Harley Davidson will also host two 9/11 Memorial Ride, led by the local ABATE chapter.

The first DPD-escorted Honor Rides will leave from Coziahr/Forsyth and the second DPD escorted ride will leave from the Memorial Stair Climb at the Hampton Inn at 6pm. Both honor rides will end at the 9/11 Memorial next to Lake Decatur.

The Honor Guard will start the memorial at 6:30 pm, followed by a message from Elder Marty Watkins. There will also be a dedication of the newly constructed flagpole and speakers will include Riki Dial, Kevin Horath, Casey Lore, and Britt McKinney. Bailey Whitlock will sing the National Anthem and Zack Garrett will sing Amazing Grace. There will also be a Ringing of the Bells by the Decatur Fire Department Honor Guard.
