Macon County Environmental Management to host hazardous waste collection September 21

September 21, 2024 – Macon County Environmental Management, in collaboration with Illinois EPA, will host a hazardous waste collection event on September 21. 

The collection will be held in the John Deere Lot at Progress City on Decatur’s northeast side from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and is open to all residents. Registration will be available from July 22nd- September 20th. Waste from businesses, institutions, non-profits and other organizations will not be accepted. Those who register for a timeslot may only bring one vehicle per registration. 

Below is a list of accepted and prohibited items. This list is not exhaustive. 

  • Allowed: acids/corrosives, oil-based paint (not latex-based), cleaning products, motor oil, fuel additives/cleaners, mercury thermometers, old medication, fluorescent bulbs, pool chemicals, antifreeze/coolant, aerosol paints 
  • Not allowed: electronics, agricultural waste, farm machinery oil, non-lead/acid/car/lawn mower batteries, propane tanks, sharps/needles, tires, explosives, ammunition, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, potentially infectious medical waste 

For safe transport, officials recommend placing items planned to be discarded in a disposable box to avoid spilling, separating unlike chemicals, securing lids of containers, stopping any leaks and placing waste in the trunk or bed of the vehicle.
