September 15, 2024 – History of the Heartland will host their 4th annual “Living Legends” event, honoring Macon County law enforcement heroes.

The event will take place at Dohert’s Pub (242 E William) on Saturday, October 19, from 4 pm to 6 pm, with doors opening at 3 pm.

“The Living Legends series is a very important way for History of the Heartland to preserve the stories of our people,” says History of the Heartland chairman, Bret Robertson. “We want to hear the stories of our law enforcement officials in their own voices with their colleagues in the room to embellish the stories. The event also gives the public an insight that is rarely made public,” he continues.

The storytelling event will be hosted by Jim Williams, the former Decatur Police Chief, and city manager.

“We are honored Chief Williams agreed to preside over this event as a moderator and host. Jim did not hesitate to commit when we presented him with the idea,” says Ayn Owens, event coordinator.

Participants will include former Chief Todd Walker. Williams promoted the 27-year-old Walker to Sgt making him the youngest Sgt. in Decatur Police Department history. Former Macon County Sheriff Jerry Dawson is also scheduled to participate.

All former and current law enforcement staff are encouraged to attend.

“It’s a night for our heroes to share stories and memories about their job and friendships that developed,” says Ayn Owens. The public is encouraged to attend. There is no admission charge and attendees may purchase food and beverages on their own. The event will take place in the back room of Doherty’s and will be videotaped for the History of the Heartland YouTube channel.

Law enforcement wishing to participate are encouraged to call Ayn (217-791-1385) to confirm their participation in the event.
