September 17, 2024 – The Rotary Club of Decatur #180, in cooperation with the Decatur Area Arts Council and the Decatur Park District, unveiled the first of a series of “Peace Poles” as public monuments to peace.

The first two Peace Poles have been installed on Decatur Park District property. The first at Scovill Oriental Garden and the second at Fairview Park Pavilion #1.

To commemorate the start of the Peace Pole Project, there was an official dedication ceremony Tuesday at the Scovill Garden location.

The dedication also recognized International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”), observed around the world each year on September 21. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution to provide a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.

Each Peace Pole bears the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in different languages on each of its four sides. The first two Poles include the languages English, Spanish, Hindi, and Greek.
