U of I Extension to host “Monarch Madness” September 21st at Rock Springs

September 17, 2024 – The monarch butterfly’s migration cycle is a natural wonder facing unprecedented challenges. Habitat loss and other factors have placed this iconic species at risk. To raise awareness and celebrate the monarch, the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners, and Master Naturalists invite the public to an educational event at Rock Springs Nature Center.

Monarch Madness will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 21 at Rock Springs Nature Center, 3939 Nearing Lane in Decatur. This all-ages event will feature various activities such as crafts, educational booths, an obstacle course, and a catch and release of monarchs. All activities are free. Mimi’s Frosty will also be on-site to purchase frozen treats.

“Monarch Madness is a fun way to educate the community on the importance of the monarch butterfly and how important this beautiful pollinator is to our ecosystem,” says Stephanie Hale, agriculture program coordinator. “Most people are amazed by the monarch’s unique orange and black markings and how elegantly they float through the air, but not many realize how incredibly important they are to our fruits, vegetables, and flowers.”

Advance registration by Sept. 18 is requested at go.illinois.edu/Monarch24. However, walk-ins will be welcome.
