September 26, 2024 – The Governor Richard J. Oglesby Mansion located at 421 West William Street will be hosting an Open House on Sunday, September 29 from 2pm-4pm.

A $5 per adult and $2 per child donation is requested.  Tourists are encouraged to take pictures inside the home.

The Mansion is the only surviving home the Governor lived in.  There are many original features in the home including original hand carved fireplaces, a 3,000-piece parquet floor in his study, pocket doors, his daughter’s Harp, books from his library and more.  Tours are given by board members and volunteer docents.  The mansion is a venue on the State of Illinois’ Looking for Lincoln Campaign.

Governor Oglesby is credited with coining the phrase “the Rail-splitter Candidate” for his friend Abraham Lincoln. The Governor remained close friends of President Lincoln and was with him upon his death.  Oglesby then accompanied the President’s body back to Springfield for the burial.
