September 29, 2024 – The Macon County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a new scam targeting area residents.
The Macon County Sheriff’s Office says it has received numerous phone calls from residents saying that they received calls from a person identifying themselves as an officer with the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.  They falsely claim that the call recipient has a federal warrant for their arrest and must withdraw a large sum of money to avoid legal trouble.
The Macon County Sheriff’s Office says this is a scam and reminds residents that they will never call individuals asking for monetary payment for any law enforcement-related function. They also say to be aware these individuals are sometimes calling from numbers that appear to be local phone numbers.
What to do if you receive this call:
1. Hang up immediately.
2. Do not provide any personal or financial information.
3. Spread the word to your friends.
