Erik Ethell named Deputy Chief of Police

May 8, 2025 – The Decatur Police Department is announcing the promotion of Erik Ethell to Deputy Chief of Police. 

Ethell has been with DPD for 17 years and previously served as Lieutenant. He will be Deputy Chief of Administrative Operations, taking the place of Brad Allen who was appointed Police Chief. 

“I’m excited for the appointment of Lt. Erik Ethell to the position of Deputy Chief,” said incoming Chief Brad Allen. “Lt. Ethell has a broad range of experience within the department and will be a great asset to the administrative team at DPD. I am happy for Lt. Ethell and this advancement of his career.” 

Ethell started his career with DPD in May 2008, was named detective in 2013, then promoted to Sergeant in 2018, before his most recent role as Lieutenant since 2022. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has a Master’s degree. 

His first day as Deputy Chief of Police will be May 9, 2025
