
May 9, 2024 – Decatur Police Chief Shane Brandel was honored for his 28 years of service Friday during a retirement ceremony at the Decatur Police Department.
Brandel joined DPD in April 1997 and worked in several different units and all three divisions of the department throughout his tenure. He was assigned to Detective in 2000, then rose the ranks to Sergeant in 2005, Lieutenant in 2015, and Deputy Chief of Police in 2016. He was appointed Chief of Police in July 2021.
During his time as Chief ,Brandel oversaw implementation advanced technology, including upgraded equipment and software, as well as strengthened officer training programs. Brandel is also credited with improved internal and external communications to foster greater transparency, collaboration, and engagement.
“The overwhelming emotion I feel today is gratitude. Gratitude for the incredible journey I have had the privilege to experience over the past 28 years of service at the Decatur Police Department,” Brandel said. “Being a police officer has been one of the greatest honors of my life. It has been more than a job, it’s been a calling, a mission, and a profound source of fulfillment.”
Incoming Decatur Police Chief Brad Allen, who has worked beside Brandel for 27 years, credited Brandel for his service and example.
“You placed your trust in me as I served along side you in one of the department’s top leadership roles,” Allen said. “Working with you day in and day out, I have learned from your example and now feel prepared to take on the role as Chief and continue building the strong foundation that you have helped create.”
Allen added, “In a time when few remain committed to one organization for so long, Chief Brandel’s unwavering dedication to this department, the city, and our citizens deserves our deepest gratitude.”
