May 29, 2025 – The Decatur Police and Kroger will host their “Pack the Cruiser” food drive on Saturday May 31st from 10am to 2pm to help address a variety of food needs, particularly for children during the summer months.

Colleen Juergensen, president of Kroger Central Division, says, “The timing of this drive is especially important because, when school is out, many children won’t have access to the nutrition provided through school lunches. We also know demand is up at food banks and pantries while donations are down. So, Pack the Cruiser helps ensure food is available when local families need help.”

The following products are among the items especially appreciated by the local food banks and pantries receiving the donations:

Peanut butter (plastic jar)

Jelly (plastic jar)

Canned fruit & vegetables

Cereal boxes

Granola bars

Applesauce & fruit cups

Instant oatmeal

Mac & cheese cups

Canned tuna & chicken

The food drive has grown from just three suburban Indianapolis stores to nearly 30 Illinois and Indiana stores this year. This is the second year for the drive with Decatur Police.

“One of the core values of the Decatur Police Department is Service,” says Recruiting Officer Kara Flannery. “There are countless ways the department and officers can give back to those they routinely serve, and we are honored one is the Pack the Cruiser event. We understand that food insecurity is far too common in Decatur, and if we can assist in any way to ensure no child goes without a healthy meal, we will do whatever it takes.”

Officers will gather at Decatur’s 1818 S. Airport Plaza Kroger, collecting donations for Northeast Community Fund.

“The Pack the Cruiser event is more than just a food drive;” said Angel Lawrence, the organization’s executive director, “it is a reflection of the compassion and commitment our community has for one another. At Northeast Community Fund, we are honored to be the recipient of this effort, which directly supports families in crisis and individuals who rely on us daily for essential nutrition and care. We are grateful for this partnership and the visible reminder it provides that when we come together, we can ensure no one in our community goes hungry.”
