June 10, 2025 – Fairview Park has a new attraction, an innovative destination playground that is a complete departure from your typical swings and slide.

The previous playground in Fairview was installed in 1995 and needed an upgraded. The $1.5 million dollar renovation was funded in part with $600,000 in OSLAD funds which were championed by State Representative Sue Scherer. The rest of the funding was made possible by Erv & Linda Arends and The Nims Family.

Construction began early Spring of 2024 and started with the city sewer system upgrades. Fehr Graham was the design company and Game Time Playgrounds were contracted for the equipment. Decatur Park District Staff, even along with some Certified Playground Retirees, came back to help with this project.

The playground includes climbing structures, Ninja Warrior styles obstacle course, a timed 40-yard dash, and a sports ball wall. There are also inclusive elements for children with disabilities.

“This innovative playground introduces elements that have never been seen before in Decatur, and will greatly enhance outdoor recreational opportunities, physical health, and will provide a fresh and enriching experience for children and families in Fairview Park and park neighbors.” Stated Executive director Clay Gerhard.
