June 15, 2025 – Hundreds of community members gathered Saturday to benefit a local young man who is recovering from a devastating sledding accident in January.

The Big Daddy Open, benefiting Charlie Spurlock, featured a golf tournament with over 200 players, a pool party, and a dinner and live auction with over 400 people in attendance.

In January, Charlie was  in critical condition after the sledding accident that took the life of his young friend, Jack Brinkoetter. Since the accident, Charlie has been recovering and receiving extensive physical therapy at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

The funds raised during the event will help the family cover extensive medical costs and housing while Charlie receives therapy in Chicago. The Spurlock family said they were overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible generosity and support they received from The Big Daddy Open.

“Charlie continues to amaze us every single day with his eagerness and adventurous spirit—always ready to dive into whatever comes his way. It’s been amazing to see his progress and growing independence. We’re excited to continue building on this momentum in the days ahead! Charlie’s stay at Shirley Ryan in Chicago has been extended with a new discharge date set for July 9! He’s absolutely giddy, and so are we. We’re excited to see just how much more he’ll achieve during this time. Charlie continues to push the envelope every single day, and we couldn’t be prouder of his determination and progress,” said Charlie’s father, Ryan Spurlock.
