June 17, 2025 – Sheriff Jim Root has officially announced that he will be seeking a third term as Sheriff of Macon County.

Root, who has served as Sheriff since 2021, has been in law enforcement for 29 years.

“It has been the honor of my life to serve as your sheriff,” Root said in a public statement. “Together, we’ve made great strides in keeping our communities safe, improving response times, prioritizing training, and increasing transparency. But there’s still work to do — and I’m ready to continue that mission.”

Root’s campaign says that under his leadership, the sheriff’s office has implemented “innovative public safety initiatives, strengthened relationships with local communities, and prioritized accountability and integrity in every aspect of the department’s work.”

Root emphasized that his campaign will focus on continuing these successes, increasing recruitment and retention of qualified deputies, and further investing in programs that connect law enforcement with the community in positive and proactive ways.

“As sheriff, my duty is not just to enforce the law, but to serve every resident with fairness, respect, and commitment to justice,” Root added. “I’m asking for your support to continue this important work for a third term.”
