July 28, 2025 – The Macon County Conservation District is inviting individuals, families, and groups to learn how to keep local trails in the best shape by getting involved in one of their most flexible volunteer opportunities, trail monitoring. Volunteers can choose the Conservation Area, the trail, and the frequency that best fits their lifestyle.
Trail Monitors walk the trails across Macon County’s five Conservation Areas and report issues such as fallen trees, damaged benches, or trail damage. Volunteers may also use hand pruners to lightly trim invasive plants like honeysuckle and multiflora rose.
“For anyone who enjoys being outside, this is a fun and easy way to give back on your own time,’ says Volunteer Coordinator Jenny Garver. “It’s also a great option for families or friends looking to spend some meaningful time together in nature.”
A Trail Monitoring Training session will be held on Saturday, August 2 from 10:00 – 11:30am at the Rock Springs Nature Center in the East Conference Room. The training includes a short, relaxed walk to demonstrate monitoring techniques. This training session is free.
Those interested should RSVP to Jenny Garver by Wednesday, July 31 by emailing JGarver@MaconCCD.org or by calling 217-542-5536.
