July 28, 2025 – Decatur Public Schools District #61 has updated several district policies for the 2025–26 school year.

Beginning this school year, students who come to school smelling of marijuana or other offensive, distracting, and/or noxious odors will be instructed to call home for a change of clothes or may be picked up in order to change before returning to class. In addition, parents and visitors who arrive on any DPS campus with similar odors will be asked to leave the premises.

“As a district, we are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and focused space for learning,” said Dr. Rochelle Clark, Superintendent of Decatur Public Schools. “These updates are not meant to be punitive, but rather proactive steps toward supporting the well-being and success of all students. We want to work in partnership with families to keep our schools safe, welcoming, and distraction-free.”

The district also reminds families that DPS remains a cell phone-free environment. All student cell phones, and electronic devices must be powered off and placed in a secure location during class time, passing periods, and lunch hours. This policy continues to be enforced to minimize distractions and maintain student engagement.
