September 9, 2025 – In celebration of its 150th anniversary, the Decatur Public Library will host bestselling author Ellen Hopkins for a special evening dedicated to intellectual freedom and the power of literature.

Hopkins, the award-winning author of fourteen New York Times bestselling young adult novels-in-verse, two middle grade novels-in-verse, and four adult novels, brings a unique perspective to discussions about literary freedom. Her works, which tackle challenging topics including addiction, abuse, and mental health, have made her both one of America’s most celebrated young adult authors and, paradoxically, the most frequently challenged author in the United States according to the American Library Association.

“Ellen Hopkins embodies the very principles our library has championed for a century and a half,” said Rick Meyer, Library Director. “Her courage in addressing difficult but important topics exemplifies why intellectual freedom remains essential to our democracy and our community’s growth.”

The evening will feature Hopkins discussing her writing process, her approach to tackling taboo subjects in young adult literature, and her experiences navigating censorship attempts. Following her presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session and meet Hopkins during a book signing.

“This milestone celebration reflects the incredible support we’ve received from our community partners and sponsors throughout our history,” added Rick Meyer. “Their partnership enables us to continue our mission of fostering lifelong learning and ensuring equitable access to information for every member of our community.”

The event will be held Thursday, September 18, 2025, 6:00–8:00 p.m. in the Madden Auditorium at the Decatur Public Library. The event is free and open to the public.
