September 10, 2025 Decatur Public Schools District 61 brought the Adopt a School initiative to the Scoville Zoo Education Center on Wednesday with the goal of building stronger partnerships between local organizations, individuals, and schools throughout the district.

The program invites community members, businesses, and organizations to select a school to “adopt” and support through involvement, mentorship, and resources. Supporters are encouraged to meet with school principals to identify specific needs and find ways to contribute.

According to district officials, the focus areas of the initiative are improving student achievement in reading and math, increasing test scores, and ensuring every child has the support they need to succeed academically and socially.

“Our kids get to see people in the community that care about them and want to be apart of their educational lives. They get to build those connections so as they get older, they understand what it means to give back to the community.” said Decatur Public Schools Superintndent Dr. Rochelle Clark.

As part of the program, participants may visit classrooms to read with students, assist with school activities, or simply greet children at the start of the school day to show encouragement. All volunteers must complete a background check prior to interacting with students, in line with district safety protocols.

Interested individuals or organizations can contact the district office or visit their chosen school directly to begin the process.
