October 6, 2025 – Local jurisdictions have reinstated the temporary burn ban on open buring in Macon County due to an extreme fire risk.

Due to prolonged dry conditions and a significantly elevated risk of wildfires and field fires, County Fire Protection Districts have announced the continuance of a temporary suspension on all open burning activities in Macon County Fire Protection District jurisdictions.

The City of Decatur will continue to operate under its regular burn ordinance. Residents within city limits should contact their local fire department with questions regarding permitted activities.

Open burning is prohibited for residential and agricultural burning, and burning of yard waste

This suspension will remain in effect until weather conditions improve and fire danger is significantly reduced.

Fire Protection Districts may bill property owners for the costs associated with responses to unauthorized burning incidents.

Macon County officials are closely monitoring conditions in coordination with the National Weather Service – Lincoln. The public will be notified of any changes or updates as conditions evolve.
