December 4, 2025 – Ahead of the second firearm deer season and other upcoming hunting periods, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is urging hunters to comply with state laws and guidelines related to technology use in the field. The agency highlighted three key areas of concern: drones, artificial intelligence tools, and electric bicycles.
IDNR reiterated that the use of unmanned aircraft systems for any part of hunting or wildlife recovery is illegal in Illinois. According to the department, prohibited drone use can violate fair-chase standards and may result in enforcement actions. Penalties can include the seizure and forfeiture of equipment. Regulations governing drones and wildlife can be found in the Illinois Wildlife Code under 520 ILCS 5/2.33(i) and 520 ILCS 5/1.2o.
The department also noted an increase in hunters turning to artificial intelligence tools for regulatory information. IDNR officials warned that AI-generated responses often contain inaccuracies and may not reflect current rules. The agency advises hunters to rely on official sources, including the Illinois Wildlife Code, conservation administrative rules, and the state’s Hunting and Trapping Digest, for accurate and up-to-date information.
Electric bicycles continue to grow in popularity, but IDNR emphasized that e-bikes are not allowed on IDNR-owned or managed lands for hunting access or other uses, except on public access roads or designated bike trails. Hunters are encouraged to check site-specific rules by visiting individual state park websites or contacting local park offices.
