December 22, 2025 –Fire officials are reminding residents that the holiday season brings an increased risk of home fires, often caused by decorations, candles, and cooking activities. With more people entertaining and spending time at home, taking a few preventative steps can help reduce the risk of accidents.

Officials recommend keeping live Christmas trees well-watered and placed away from heat sources such as fireplaces, space heaters, and candles. Dry trees can ignite quickly, making regular watering an important safety measure throughout the season. Artificial trees should also be labeled as fire-resistant.

Candles, while popular during the holidays, should be used with caution. Fire officials advise placing candles away from flammable decorations, curtains, and furniture, and never leaving them unattended. Battery-operated candles can provide a safer alternative in homes with children or pets.

Cooking is another leading cause of holiday fires. Residents are reminded to stay in the kitchen while cooking, especially when using stovetops or ovens. Unattended cooking remains one of the most common causes of home fires during the holidays.

Finally, fire officials encourage residents to check smoke detectors before hosting gatherings or overnight guests. Working smoke alarms on every level of the home and near sleeping areas can provide early warning in the event of a fire. Taking these simple precautions can help ensure a safer and more enjoyable holiday season.
