January 19, 2026 – The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association has announced it will award more than $58,000 in college scholarships statewide to students pursuing higher education during the 2026–2027 academic year.
The scholarships may be used for tuition, books, and required fees. Eligible students must be permanent Illinois residents and enrolled full-time at a certified institution of higher learning during the 2026–2027 school year, excluding summer sessions. Online enrollment is acceptable.
In Macon County, Sheriff James Root will award one scholarship in the amount of $500. The association noted there are no restrictions on applicants based on race, age, creed, color, sex, or national origin.
Applications are available through local sheriff’s offices or on the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association website. Completed applications, including the required essay and documentation, must be returned to the sheriff’s office in the applicant’s county of permanent residence and postmarked by March 13, 2026.
