February 2, 2026 – The Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the American Lung Association in Illinois are recognizing Radon Action Month by encouraging families and schools to increase awareness about radon and its health risks.

As part of the effort, the agencies announced a statewide radon awareness media contest and opened submissions. The annual competitions invite students to create posters and videos designed to educate the public about radon testing and exposure risks.

Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, according to health officials.

The 2026 contests are open to students statewide. Middle school students ages 9 to 14 are eligible to enter the Radon Poster Contest, while high school students may participate in the Radon Video Contest by creating a 30-second commercial-style video promoting radon awareness. Submissions for both contests are due by March 15.

Prizes for the poster contest include $200 for first place, $150 for second place, and $100 for third place. The video contest offers $600 for first place, $500 for second place, $400 for third place, and an additional $200 award for the video receiving the most views.

In addition to the contests, discounted radon test kits are available to Illinois residents while supplies last. Kits can be purchased through the American Lung Association or by calling the Illinois Radon HelpLine at 800-325-1245. Radon testing typically begins with a short-term test lasting two to seven days.

Health officials recommend contacting the Illinois Radon HelpLine if test results show radon levels at or above the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s action level of 4.0 picocuries per liter to receive guidance on follow-up testing and mitigation options.

More information about the radon poster and video contests is available through IEMA-OHS.
