Young Leaders in Action Awards $5,000 to Support Students in Macon County

February 15, 2026— The Young Leaders in Action (YLIA) Grant Selection Team has awarded $5,000 in funding to five local organizations focused on supporting student dignity, wellness, and academic success across Macon County.

YLIA is a youth-led organization representing 10 schools throughout the county. Through a structured grant review process, student leaders evaluated applications, assessed community needs, and made final funding decisions based on impact, sustainability, and alignment with the organization’s mission of service and leadership.

Each of the following organizations will receive $1,000:

  • Eisenhower High School Counseling Department — Basic Needs Station, providing hygiene items and school supplies to help reduce bullying and increase student confidence.

  • Sangamon Valley High SchoolStorm Shelter, offering hygiene products, school supplies, spirit wear, menstrual products, and snacks to promote belonging and reduce anxiety.

  • Ellsworth Dansby Jr. Magnet SchoolSoaring to New Heights with Support, ensuring access to uniform-approved sweatshirts, clean underwear, and healthy snacks for student athletes.

  • World Service Enterprise OrganizationReady to Learn: Student Dignity and Wellness Support Program, assisting students and families experiencing housing instability and financial hardship with hygiene supplies, nutritious food, and seasonal clothing.

  • Sunshine Supplies for TeachersSunshine Care Kits, creating classroom-ready hygiene kits for students in need.

“When students’ basic needs are met, they can focus on learning instead of survival,” said Temethia Joyner, YLIA Program Facilitator. “We are proud to invest in programs that protect student dignity and strengthen our community.”
