March 31, 2026— The Governor Richard J. Oglesby Mansion will host its annual educational play for fifth grade students from April 27 through May 1, 2026.
This year’s production, “Grant Visits the Oglesbys,” focuses on President Ulysses S. Grant’s 1880 visit to Decatur. The program invites area students to tour the mansion and interact with actors portraying historical figures from the 1880s.
According to organizers, students will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about local and state history during the visit. Teachers are also provided with pre-visit educational materials to incorporate into classroom instruction.
The program highlights the historical significance of Richard J. Oglesby, who nominated Abraham Lincoln for president at the 1860 Republican National Convention in Decatur.
Organizers say the annual event is designed to support classroom learning and provide students with an interactive introduction to Illinois history.
