April 6, 2026— State officials are urging drivers to stay focused behind the wheel as part of an April campaign of Distracted Driving Awareness.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is partnering with the Illinois State Police and local departments to increase enforcement targeting distracted driving.
Officials say officers will be watching for texting, social media use, video viewing, and other distractions.
According to state data, distracted driving crashes in Illinois resulted in more than 250 deaths and over 28,000 injuries between 2020 and 2024. In 2024 alone, 51 people were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers.
Illinois law prohibits the use of handheld electronic devices while driving, though officials note even hands-free use can reduce attention on the road.
Drivers are encouraged to silence notifications, use passengers to handle communications, or pull over safely before using their phones.
