April 29, 2026 – In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, the Decatur Public Library is putting a spotlight on teen well-being with a full week of activities designed to support and engage young people.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 40% of high school students reported feeling persistently sad or hopeless in recent years, while nearly 1 in 5 seriously considered attempting suicide. The National Institute of Mental Health also reports that about 1 in 5 adolescents experience a mental health disorder each year—highlighting the growing need for awareness, support, and accessible resources.

To help address those needs, the library is hosting Teen Mental Health Week from May 4 through May 9, offering a variety of creative and interactive programs:

  • Monday, May 4: Monthly Teen Meetup (5:00–7:00 p.m.)
  • Tuesday, May 5: Testing Fidget Toys (6:00–7:45 p.m.)
  • Wednesday, May 6: Coloring Books and Lo-Fi Beats (3:00–5:00 p.m.)
  • Thursday, May 7: Teen Craft Club: Air Dry Clay Lamps (2:30–4:30 p.m., registration required)
  • Friday, May 8: Mini Therapy Horses (2:30–4:30 p.m.)
  • Saturday, May 9: Take & Make Bookmarks (9:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.)

Library organizers say the goal is to create a welcoming space where teens can relax, connect, and explore positive coping strategies. From hands-on crafts to calming activities and even visits from therapy animals, the week is designed to meet teens where they are and encourage open conversations about mental health.

Community members are encouraged to spread the word and support local teens as they navigate the challenges of growing up in today’s world.
