May 3, 2026 – History of the Heartland is inviting the community to explore the beauty and history of local churches during its annual Stained Glass Stories event on Sunday, May 17 in Decatur.
The free, self-guided tour will run from 1 to 4 p.m., featuring four historic downtown churches known for their stunning stained-glass windows and architecture. Participating locations include St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, St. James Catholic Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, and First United Methodist Church.
Organizers say the event was created to highlight the stories behind the stained glass and showcase the architectural beauty found within these historic buildings. This year, two of the churches also feature recent restoration efforts, including work at St. John’s Episcopal Church and renovations at First United Methodist following a past fire.
Each location will have guides or information available, allowing visitors to learn about the history and craftsmanship behind the windows. Attendees can begin at any site and travel at their own pace, with free trolley service provided by the City of Decatur connecting all four locations.
Organizers say the event continues to draw interest from across the region, offering a unique opportunity to experience some of Decatur’s most treasured landmarks.
